Third place in the Best Tableau category in 76th Republic Day celebrations at New Delhi

At the 76th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi, the Andhra Pradesh Government showcasing the famous Etikoppaka wooden toys, captivated the audience. It secured Third place in the Best Tableau category, bringing pride to Anakapalli district.

The village of Etikoppaka, located in Yelamanchili Mandal, Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, is renowned for its globally acclaimed wooden toys. These handcrafted toys are exported worldwide. In 2017, the traditional Etikoppaka toys received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, further cementing their authenticity and heritage.

The toys are crafted from ankudu wood as the primary raw material. Natural dyes, extracted from various seeds, tree bark, roots, and leaves, are used to create vibrant colors. The lacquer finishing process involves polishing the painted toys with leaves from the mogali shrub, enhancing their elegance.

The toy-making process, known as Turned Wood Lacquer Craft, ensures that these toys are eco-friendly and sustainable, being entirely made from natural ingredients like seeds, lacquer, roots, and leaves. Hence, Etikoppaka toys are often considered to be “one with nature.”
